The Layered View

FILLED

Learn innovative techniques for altering photographs with washes and texture, then merge them with various
fragments and scraps into unique works of art. Although I will demo a simple book structure to house the techniques,
you’re free to create whatever you choose. This workshop has a very loose project format, allowing you the option to make one of the sample projects,
or to simply ‘play’’ with the techniques and make pieces for a future art project. I’ll bring several samples of different types of books,
quilties, collages, etc., and will show you how each was created, in order to provide you with a jumping-off point to spark your creativity!

You’re also invited to an optional gathering with on Sun. afternoon in Los Gatos--
we'll wander through town and take photos, chat about art, get a bite to eat... very casual and unstructured.
There’s no fee and it’s not mandatory for class, so don’t worry if you can’t make it.
We’re just offering it as a fun and informative supplement to the class, and a great way to get acquainted before we dive into the workshop!

Mingled Elements

A collaborative workshop taught by DJ Pettitt and Deryn Mentock.

CLASS HAS FILLED

Come mingle with Deryn and DJ, in this very unique, two day, mixed media workshop!
This collaboration will take you beyond painting and embellishment.
After creating a beautifully gilded art piece in class, we will send you home brimming with enough technique,
information and inspiration to use in a wide range of artwork; from jewelry making to journals,
including decorative elements that can be used in book making, assemblage, collage, altered art and everything in between!

Days 3 and 4
June 14 and 15, 2009

Art Journal

CLASS HAS FILLED

Learn variations of altering fabric, and adding detail with tissue and acrylic washes.
We will be creating a face image, but we won't be using traditional painting techniques.
We will use supplied sketches (or you can bring your own), and layer them on fabric, add more collage elements,
finger paint, add texture and washes of color.
Explore simple ways to create fabric landscapes, and/or abstract compositions.
We will add painted journal pages inside, and complete the signatures with more collage elements, depending on time.
Covers are thick and sturdy, yet flexible, and can even be used as frameable art.

Two day workshop

Spend two days altering, layering, and merging fragments and snippets of paper and textile in this two day book workshop.
Meld together lavish, and irresistible book covers that are sturdy, and thick with texture and technique,
yet remain flexible, and will cross over to many other mixed media projects.
We will paint the blank journal pages with washes of acrylic paint to ready them for collage, and/or journaling.
We will also paint sheets of art tissue to incorporate with water-soluble crayons, for further page embellishment and interest.

Mixed Medley

Immerse yourself in a 3-day class filled with innovative techniques and inspiration!
Learn a number of my favorite techniques during this artistic odyssey.
You'll be exploring new ways to prepare backgrounds, including using different mediums to create texture and interest;
making journal and collage pages with fabric and tissue paper and varied painting methods;
altering photos in unique ways; learning simple book construction, and how to create a pleasing composition
that will add continuity and flow to your work. You’ll have the opportunity to complete a finished project of your choosing,
or simply explore the techniques and spend time on the ones that stir your creative spirit!

Synergy of Forms

Are you drawn to bold graphics, contemporary colors AND the nostalgia of the traditional and vintage look?
Do you struggle with how to combine seemingly disparate art forms into a cohesive whole, or did you even know that you could?
Using fluid acrylics, watercolor pencils, tissues, and other mediums,
I'lll teach you how to meld the illustrative, abstract look with the more traditional art forms.
In this new workshop, we'll be incorporating all of my favorites:
painting, printing, mark-making, altered photo techniques, washes and other methods to create a panel
that can be left as is, and used as a wall hanging, split into smaller panels and hung separately, or used in other projects.
