Days 1 and 2, June 12 and 13, 2009 Mingled Elements A collaborative workshop taught by DJ Pettitt and Deryn Mentock. Come mingle with Deryn and DJ, in this very unique, two day, mixed media workshop! This collaboration will take you beyond painting and embellishment. After creating a beautifully gilded art piece in class, we will send you home brimming with enough technique, information and inspiration to use in a wide range of artwork; from jewelry making to journals, including decorative elements that can be used in book making, assemblage, collage, altered art and everything in between! ![]() |
| Day 1– Painted Lady with DJ Learn step-by-step painting techniques on canvas board, with lots of one-on-one help, during day one of the workshop. We will be using transparent, Golden Fluid acrylics while exploring glazing, background, and texture techniques; then learn the fine art of face painting. Students will learn to add depth and richness to their paintings for a beautiful effect.

Supplies for Day 1
Brushes
These need to be fairly firm acrylic brushes, but not scratchy. Most brushes will work, as long as they aren't extremely soft, or old and flared. They need to have nice sharp edges and points. You will need a couple flats that are about 1/4” wide, and 1/2” wide, and a round brush, about a size #4, and a long liner. Here are the brushes that I will be using (or similar... I'm constantly replacing brushes, but they will be close to this) ![]() Please email if you have questions. Golden Fluid paints Some of the colors I will demo with for faces include; Burnt Umber Light, Bone Black, Red Oxide, Raw Sienna, Paynes Gray. Also, bring a few other colors that you like for painting clothing, flowers, birds, trees, backgrounds etc. Small bottle Acrylic Glazing Liquid any brand as long as it’s satin or matte. You won't need much of this, and can easily share with friends. One bottle will go a long way. White Gesso Small container, any brand. Paint Palette Flat will work best. This can be a purchased flat palette, or cardboard covered with foil. Most anything will work as long as it’s flat. Water container Paint rag Optional: Small collage elements such as a snippet of an old letter or words cut from an old book. $10 kit fee includes handout, Saral transfer paper, booklet with color step by step photos, patterns, and prepped 6X6 canvas (I am pepping them for you to save time, but will demo how I do it). ![]() |
| Day 2 - Wire Framework with Deryn Students will learn wire working techniques to compliment their paintings with a unique, beaded wire framework. Included in the frame is a nest charm that can be removed and worn as a necklace. Other techniques presented include; wire bending, creating wire and paper leaves, wire tendrils and spirals, paddle head pins, wire wrapped bead caps (beehive wrap), constructing a hook that can be used as a clasp, attaching dangles, and more. ![]() |

| Learn variations of
altering fabric, and adding detail with tissue and acrylic washes. We will be creating a face image, but we won't be using traditional painting techniques. We will use supplied sketches (or you can bring your own), and layer them on fabric, add more collage elements, finger paint, add texture and washes of color. We will add painted journal pages inside, and complete the signatures with more collage elements, depending on time. Covers are thick and sturdy, yet flexible, and can even be used as framable art. No sewing required, but you can bring a sewing machine if you would rather machine-stitch the pages to the signature instead of with glue, or if you would like to add sewing as an embellishment. Depending on the amount of detail you add to your book, you may not finish it in class, but will leave with an understanding of the techniques taught, and the ability to finish at home. |

| Supplies
for Days 3 and 4 Regular Matte Gel Medium Small container, any brand, as long as it's regular gel White Gesso
Small container, any brand. Matte Medium or Fluid Matte Medium Small container, any brand Paint Palette Flat will work best. This can be a purchased flat palette, or cardboard covered with foil. Most anything will work as long as it’s flat. Water container Paint rag or paper towels Palette knife A trowel shape is best. Flat ones won’t work. My favorite is a cake knife such as Ateco #1385, but regular trowel shaped palette knives are fine. Pencil with hard lead Scissors Super fine point black Sharpie Soft Brayer Journal paper Sample book uses 8, 9” X 14” sheets per signature, and has two signatures. My favorite journal paper is: Wausau Paper 82213 Exact Vellum Bristol White/ 92 Brightness 67 pound It is 11X17, and I cut it to size. Of course you can use any journal paper you would like as long as it's at least 67 pound. File folders cut to size work great too. You will need to cut them before class, or bring tools to cut them with. Brushes The same brushes used for the painting class will work great for this class as well: A couple flats that are about 1/4” wide, and 1/2” wide, and a round brush, about a size #4, and a long liner. ![]() An inexpensive utility brush about 1" wide for painting journal pages and spreading matte medium. Not foam brushes. A few bottles of acrylic paint in colors you like for backgrounds, along with a brown, raw sienna and a black. I prefer Golden Fluid paint, and will demo with Burnt Umber Light, Raw Sienna, Red Oxide, and Bone Black for the face. 2 pieces of duck cloth, or other unprimed, canvas-type cloth in cream or white that are 8” X 10” each. This needs to be a fairly close weave, and will be used as the base for your book. Collage goodies Anything you would like to add to your book. Ideas include: images, vintage gloves, ephemera, tags, tea bags, lace, buttons, beads, feathers, text from books etc. Fabric scraps for creating covers of book and using in signatures, inside covers, and spines. Quilting cotton, prints, home decorator fabrics, and vintage quilt pieces are a few ideas. Glue stick Inexpensive white tissue paper You will only need a couple pieces. Japanese screw punch with a 1/16" tip (this can be shared with several people) or a 1/16” punch and hammer. Small cutting mat to lay signatures on as you punch holes Small piece of upholstery fabric or other heavy fabric to use for the spine. It needs to be about 5"X 10". Bring a piece that matches your color scheme, or you can collage other fabric over it, and the color won't matter. Needle for binding book I like to use a 3" long doll sculpting needle Optional: Sewing machine and thread, if you would like decorative stitching on your book, and to sew the pages to the signature. Hair dryer if you can fit one in. We can share. No kit fee. Kit includes: handout, pattern, art tissue, and waxed linen |
